Fuel Signs Open Letter About EHRC Interim Update on Gender Definition
Posted on: 7th May 2025
Fuel has signed an open letter from cultural leaders across the UK expressing deep concern over the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) interim update following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
The letter calls attention to the rushed and harmful nature of the EHRC’s update, which fails to protect Trans, Nonbinary and Intersex people from discrimination. It highlights the impracticality of the guidance and the significant cultural, social, and economic impacts it would have on public venues, including arts spaces.
The signatories – including Fuel – stand in solidarity with Trans, Nonbinary and Intersex communities, affirming that everyone should be free to use facilities that align with their gender identity and rejecting any policy that promotes exclusion or segregation.
The letter urges the EHRC to engage in proper consultation with affected communities and venue operators before issuing further guidance.
